How the amazing Ghanaian chief, Asamani of Akwamu, deceived and took control of Christiansborg Castle in 1693 and later sold it to the Danes in 1694.

Osu Castle, also known as Christiansborg Castle, is a palace located in Osu, Accra, Ghana. Christiansborg Castle was the work of Danish colonists in 1659 on land acquired from Paramount chief Okaikoi of the Ga ethnic group. For a long time, the fortification was shuffled between Portuguese, Swedish and Danish. Here and there he was seized by force; on several occasions it has been purchased.

The Seized Of The Castle

In 1693, Asamani, the chief of Akwam, intended to maintain control of the palace through a clever feat. Asameni, a fruitful broker and hero, moved to Accra, mastered the Danish language, and disguised himself as a cook and mediator in order to get a job at the palace.

He considered the place, its inhabitants and activities, including the appearance and flights of the boats, as did the dealers, shippers and other people who worked and visited Christiansborg Castle.

Akuam was a state founded by the Akan people (in present- day Ghana) that flourished in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Asamani taught the Danes that he would accompany the gathering of Aquam brokers to buy ammunition. In 1693, Asamani and 80 clothed men imitating brokers entered the palace.

As it was standard practice to test inventories before purchase, the men were given ammunition. In any case, they similarly covered ammunition, gunpowder and arrows under their clothes.

In the palace of Akwamu, they attacked unknowing Danes. A wild fight ensued. Severely wounded Governor Janssen fled to shut down Fort Crevecoeur.

Many Danish merchants and authorities were injured and some were taken to Akwamu as prisoners. Asamani and his men captured the palace. The pioneer of Akwam, Asameni, engaged Christiansborg Palace for a year, calling himself the " head representative" of Christiansborg Castle, trading with merchants from many countries.

He replaced the Danes with the banner of Akuamu. In 1694 Asamani sold the fortifications to the Danes for 50 marks of gold (400 official ounces, today worth about $ 666, 920. 00), but he kept the keys.

The legacy of AKwam

The keys are still held by the ethnic assembly to this day and since then Akwamu has held them as a reward and a pleased image of the opposition by Akwamu of the Danes.
